An original bill of lading (OBL) is a contract of carriage which confirms the carrier’s receipt of the cargo while at the same time also representing the title of the cargo. Upon issuance of the first original bill of lading, two additional original bills of lading are printed at the same time and all three documents are issued as a single contract of carriage.
A cargo issued with an original bill of lading must first be released with it before proceeding to be delivered to the final destination, This can be done either with an endorsed original bill of lading or with a telex release, which means without the original copy of the OBL and in the context of today, this typically means an email release.
