ICanada ibhaso ngaphezu kwe-160 yezigidi zeedola nge-163 MW eNtsha yeSola kunye ne-48 MW yeBetri yokuGcina amandla

  • Canadian government has announced more than $160 million investment support for 9 solar projects
  • All facilities, representing a collective 163 MW PV and 48 MW storage, are located in Alberta
  • Government will fund these facilities under the SREP initiative as part of Budget 2023

The Federal Government of Canada will finance 9 solar power projects with 163 MW combined capacity and 48 MW battery energy storage with more than CAD 160 million funding from the CAD 1.56 billion Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREP).

All the selected projects are located in Alberta, according to the Federal Department of Natural Resources. These are expected to create jobs apart from generating clean and affordable energy for the local communities. Following projects being funded:

  • Michichi Solar LP and Kneehill Solar LP with each having 25 MW installed capacity of Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and Sawridge First Nation.
  • Three separate storage systems with 15 MW/34 MWh capacity each on the sites of existing solar arrays of Concord Green Energy and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation.
  • 9 MW solar plant of Métis Nation Power Authority (MNPA).
  • 14 MW solar and 2.9 MW/8.3 MWh storage project with artificial intelligence (AI) battery dispatch software by Chappice Lake Limited Partnership and Cold Lake First Nations.
  • 65 MW solar project of Enterprise Solar LP in Vulcan County.
  • 29.5 MW bifacial solar project in Cardston County by Cardston Spring Coulee Solar Limited Partnership.

“By working with Indigenous partners and industry, the Government of Canada is helping to unlock the economic potential of our clean technologies as we advance toward a prosperous net-zero future,” said Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson.

Canada has committed to $3 billion additional investments in the SREPs program under the $28 billion additional amount for clean electricity investments in Budget 2023.

In March 2023, Canada announced a financial and regulatory support package for clean electricity under Budget 2023 including Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credit.
